Project Re:claim is the UK’s first commercially operational polyester recycling plant, designed to transform post-consumer and post-industrial textiles into high-quality rPET pellets. A joint venture between The Salvation Army and sustainability innovators Plan B Circular, the initiative is redefining textile recycling and advancing the circular economy. Based in Kettering, Northamptonshire, the facility has developed cutting-edge Thermomechanical Extrusion Recycling technology to turn end of life garments and textiles into valuable raw materials, keeping polyester in use rather than losing it through landfill or incineration. By combining The Salvation Army’s nationwide collection infrastructure (operated by Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) with Plan B Circular’s technical expertise, Project Re:claim is scaling textile-to-textile recycling across the UK. The project demonstrates how collaboration between charity and enterprise can drive real change, helping brands and manufacturers reduce reliance on virgin polyester while tackling the environmental impact of textile waste. The Birmingham Plastics Network is an interdisciplinary network of over 60 researchers at the University of Birmingham, which aims to engage with the plastics waste problem comprehensively, utilising a whole-systems approach and enabling widespread impact which considers economic, environmental, social and ecological impacts. Last year, the Network launched their Policy Commission report which outlined eight recommendations for Government on how to implement policy for a sustainable future for plastics in the UK. Since then, the team have been engaging with Government through a range of mediums, including the establishment of a brand new APPG on Sustainable Plastics, to continue to influence policy decision-making in this space. This summer, the Birmingham Plastics Network are releasing a report focusing on simpler recycling legislation, unpicking the possible unintended consequences and policy interactions that may arise, and making recommendations for maximising benefit from the initiative.
