SkillsBase is an award-winning innovator in field training, digital infrastructure tools, and telecom hardware, delivering smart, scalable solutions that reduce faults, improve network reliability, and simplify infrastructure deployment. Since 2021, we have been pioneering the convergence of passive components, active electronics, and digital technologies to help carriers and contractors achieve higher performance with lower operational cost. Our journey began by listening to those who matter most: field technicians. We developed and deployed a mobile-first education platform with a Tier 1 Carrier during the pandemic, enabling engineers to learn remotely, certify their knowledge, and submit real-world evidence—all within a single app. This solution laid the foundation for our next-generation tools. One of our breakthrough innovations is the AI Virtual Buddy : a real-time quality control solution powered by computer vision. It gives engineers instant feedback on their work, enabling a pass/fail assessment based on image analysis. Within 60 days of deployment, the Virtual Buddy helped customers reduce first-time fault rates by 40–50%. This not only improves installation accuracy but also reduces the need for costly site revisits. Yet we didn’t stop there. Realising most splice faults occurred at the fibre-optic splice point, we invented and patented the Splice Fault Detector (SFD) —a game-changing device that detects infrared bleed from faulty splices. Unlike traditional splice machines, which provide only estimated results, the SFD offers precise, non-invasive testing with an instant pass/fail output. This empowers engineers to validate their work on the spot, further driving down fault rates and improving customer outcomes. Today, SkillsBase continues to innovate at the intersection of hardware and software. We recently deployed a Copper Cable Location tool with Openreach to trace copper without disconnecting customers—cutting costs, reducing roadwork disruption, and speeding up cable recovery. All SkillsBase hardware is app-powered, cloud-connected, and designed to be easily repairable. Our solutions are already deployed at scale and trusted by carriers, contractors, and training providers across the UK and beyond. We are ISO 27001 certified and have received multiple industry recognitions, including Smart Technology Innovation Awards and Red Dot for product design.
